Youth Justice Programs

Extra Judicial Sanctions Programs
Each year, we provide community placements and programming for 300 young people charged under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The EJS program is designed for first time and minor offenders to divert them from the court system while still being held accountable for their actions. Youth can be referred to one or both of our EJS programs. The Community Service Order program is offered to youth who have been sanctioned to complete a specific amount of community service hours. Youth are placed and supervised in community based and non-profit agencies to complete their mandated hours. The EJS Workshop Series are offence specific. We offer three Workshop Series that address offences related to Drugs, Assault and Theft. Each Series contains three workshops per series. Our workshops are interactive and educational and provide youth a safe space to discuss the behaviours that led them to be charged.
Court Support We offer support to youth and their families who are unfamiliar with the Youth Justice system. We help them navigate through the system by assisting them in their applications for Legal Aid, finding a lawyer, attending court appearances and offering programs to address their needs. At the request of youth and their families, we also liaise with Probation Services, Police, Children’s Aid Society, school administrators and community agencies.
Alternatives to Hate
This program was designed as an alternative to traditional anger management that focuses on the root cause of hate and oppression based on race, culture, gender and class. Youth meet once a week for eight weeks to deconstruct their own bias and critically challenge stereotypes. It is facilitated by two staff that provide a safe space to help youth cope with sensitive issues such as homophobia, racism and oppression.
