St. Stephen’s Community House served over 30,000 people in 2011!

St. Stephen’s House has reached over 30,000 people in 2011, who made over 330,000 visits to our various programs and services. Our staff was helped reach our goals with the support of around 400 volunteers that generously gave *22,540*hours of their time.

Thanks to all our clients, volunteers and staff for a great year!

‘Farmer Bill’ collects a bountiful harvest for United Way

This year the United Way committee came up with a harvest theme for the UW Campaign kickoff. Farmer Bill and his farm hands set off around our different locations gathering the generous donations from St. Stephen’s staff along the way.  St. Stephen’s staff enthusiastically participated in the campaign and gave $11,844 to United Way this Fall!


St. Stephen's Employment and Training Centre has ads on the TTC!

Our Employment and Training Centre has just launched a new line of ads on TTC buses, see if you can spot them over the coming weeks. We'd love to know what you think of them, email your comments to larran@ststephenshouse.com. Of course, if you are looking for work or training we'd love to see you at our Employment and Training Centre at 1415 Bathurst Street - no appointment needed, just drop in!

Community Development Social Action Newsletter - issue 4

St. Stephen’s participates in the social assistance program consultation

St. Stephen's Community House has taken an active role in the consultations to shape an improved social assistance program in Ontario. Over the month of August, we held workshops for our participants who live on social assistance. Three workshops were held, as well as a fourth workshop in cooperation with the Toronto Drop-In Network and the ODSP Action Coalition. These workshops were held to obtain ideas for reform from people who live on social assistance. The reports were submitted to the Commission for the Review of Social Assistance in Ontario. St Stephen’s Community House volunteers have been making their voice heard at City Hall. They have presented deputations to both the Community Development and Recreation Committee and the Executive Committee about the City of Toronto Core Services Review. Read what they had to say:

My Morning Jacket" donated $2000 to St Stephen’s!

A big thanks to “*My Morning Jacket*” for donating a share of proceeds from their Toronto show to St. Stephen's Community House. We’d also like to thank the promoters, Live Nation, who also gave $250, and all the folks at the concert who gave to our donation box. Domenica (Mimi) Brogno interium Senior Child Care teacher in the School age room at the Bellevue site is the recipient of the George Brown College School of Early Childhood Education - Mentoring Award of Excellence for 2011.
Mimi was nominated by Daniela Blass former student for her support, approachability and communication skills. Congratulations Mimi for being a encouraging role model and "a wonderful and caring co-operating teacher".

St. Stephen’s Community House is a supporter of the Fair Fare Campaign. We buy about $80,000 in TTC tickets each year to give for free to low income clients to access services and meet basic needs. The high cost of TTC is hurting many families and people living with disabilities.
