Global Divas 2008
March 26, 2008 was a magical evening, brimming with the sounds of women and song from around the globe. Our benefactor reception provided an opportunity to sample flavours from some of the city's most creative kitchens. The event this year was held in the Barbara Frum Atrium, located in the heart of the Canadian Broadcasting Centre at 250 Front Street. The concert, celebrated as one of the Toronto's premier world music events, was held in the Glenn Gould Studio. Jazz virtuoso Jane Bunnett once again generously directed and headlined the event. The 2008 Global Divas joining Jane and her band, the Spirits of Havana, included Juno-nominated Punjabi folk songstress Kiran Ahluwalia, Turkish folk singer Brenna MacCrimmon, Brazilian jazz and bossa nova star Maria Farinha and Zimbabwean vocalist and Soul Influence group member Uitsile Ndlovu. "I am very proud to be a part of this fantastic show. Every year we get a chance to discover wonderful new voices and emerging talent who often go on to greatness. Not only is Global Divas vibrant and exciting, it also generates funds for St. Stephen's Community House and builds awareness of its important services," says Bunnett. This year proceeds from Global Divas went towards supporting the Youth Arcade. Since 1990, the Arcade has been offering innovative programs that encourage at-risk neighbourhood youth to think critically, act responsibly and adopt healthy lifestyles. For 2008, funds raised at Global Divas were designated towards our Venus program for young women. The evening would not be possible without the generosity of our sponsors, who help us in so many ways, be it providing much needed funds, the fabulous food for the reception or promotional assistance.
